WITHOUT CERTAINTY
A BILINGUAL GAME

TUESDAY 9TH OF MAY 2017 AT NILE SUNSET ANNEX

We had English and Arabic words for 28 letters (one for each letter in the Arabic alphabet) and a big whiteboard. For each word, the cartoonist Andeel had a certain length of time to draw from a diverse set of instructions by commissioned artists and writers, who gave us instructions on how to draw that word. The audience shouted out what they thought the word was, and whoever shouted out the right answer won whatever cocktail was being made.

كان لدينا كلمة بالعربية وأخرى بالإنجليزية لـكل حرف من الـ ٢٨ حرفاً في الأبجدية العربية، وكان لدينا سبّورة بيضاء. قام رسّام الكاريكاتير أنديل برسم شرح للكلمة اعتماداً على توجيهات ممنوحة له من قبل فنانين وكتّاب آخرين، ومع وقت محدود لكل رسمة. كان على الجمهور أن تخمّن الكلمة التي تم رسمها، والتخمين الفائز كسب الكوكتيل الذي تم إعداده في لحظتها.

Draw a circle with a slight oval shape.

Give it a small amount of depth to make it into a shallow disc.

Draw a head in profile in the middle of the eclipse.

Draw a crown on the head.

Next to the oval-circle draw 3 double headed arrows.

Beside each arrow head draw: an apple, a shoe, a house.

Seen in profile and on the horizon, you rise vertical, then go horizontal, then vertical again.

Now relax and multiply this movement along the horizon as a sequence in space;

A succession or a row of individual places.

With as many feet as you may, none will run away.

As a sequence in history and the shape of time,

its first signal appeared during the early Dynastic Period in Egypt

You could ask yourself which one you are:

Musical or Rocking, Electrical or Ecclesiastic.
